Nuxt.js Explained: The Vue Framework for Full-Stack Sites

Introduction

Vue (covered early) is a framework for building interfaces — but a real site also needs routing, server rendering, and data fetching, which Vue alone doesn't provide. Nuxt.js, the Vue ecosystem's meta-framework (first released in 2016), adds exactly that layer: it is to Vue what Next.js (covered earlier) is to React. If you like Vue and want to build a complete site — blog, docs, storefront — Nuxt is the standard path.

File-based routing and rendering choices

Nuxt's core conveniences mirror Next.js, in Vue's style:

  • File-based routing — a file at pages/about.vue automatically becomes the /about route; no router configuration to write
  • Auto-imports — components and composables are available without import statements, so a component file is usable the moment you create it
  • Rendering modes per page — server-side rendering (SSR) for pages that need fresh data and SEO, static site generation (SSG) for content pages that can be built once, and client-side rendering where interactivity dominates — chosen per route, not per project
  • Server routes and data fetching — API endpoints live in server/api/, and composables like useFetch handle data loading with server/client behaviour built in

A Nuxt page looks like a Vue component with a script section for logic and a template for markup — familiar to any Vue developer, with the site-level machinery handled by the framework.

The honest trade

Nuxt's trade is the Vue trade: a smaller ecosystem and job market than React/Next.js, and framework magic (auto-imports, conventions) that can confuse beginners when something doesn't resolve as expected. For a simple static page, Nuxt is also more framework than needed — Astro (the batch 19 post) ships less JavaScript. But for Vue developers building a full site, Nuxt removes the boilerplate that otherwise gets hand-built on top of Vue, and its conventions are what make Vue teams productive at scale.

Takeaway

Nuxt.js is Vue's full-stack framework: file-based routing, per-page rendering choices, and server routes, with Vue's approachable style intact. If Vue is your framework, Nuxt is how you turn it into a complete site — the same role Next.js plays for React.
