Supabase Explained: The Open-Source Firebase Alternative
Introduction
Firebase (the batch 18 post) gives you a backend as a service — but on Google's platform, with a NoSQL database. Supabase, launched in 2020, offers the same idea with a different philosophy: open source, built on PostgreSQL, and designed so you can self-host it if you ever want to leave. Its pitch is "Firebase, but on Postgres" — and for developers who want relational data with backend-as-a-service convenience, that combination is exactly the appeal.
What you get in one project
A Supabase project bundles the pieces a typical app needs:
- Postgres database — a full relational database (the PostgreSQL post's engine) with a table editor, SQL access, and Row Level Security rules that decide who can read or write each row
- Authentication — email, OAuth (Google, GitHub), and magic links, with user data stored in Postgres tables you can query like any other data
- Storage — file uploads with access policies, for avatars, images, and documents
- Realtime and Edge Functions — live updates when data changes, and small serverless functions for jobs that can't run in the browser
- Auto-generated APIs — every table instantly gets a REST API, so frontend code reads and writes data with a client library instead of a custom server
The pattern mirrors Firebase: configure a project, add its client library, and call its services from frontend code — except the database underneath is relational, so joins, constraints, and transactions (the SQL and MySQL posts) all work as expected.
The honest trade
Supabase's trade is youth and depth: it is younger than Firebase, so its ecosystem and documentation are smaller, and its power comes with Postgres concepts — Row Level Security, in particular, must be understood, because a misconfigured policy can expose data. Self-hosting is possible but is real operational work, not a one-click escape. The rule of thumb: Supabase when you want backend-as-a-service convenience with relational data and an open-source exit; Firebase when you want the most mature ecosystem and are happy with NoSQL.
Takeaway
Supabase is Firebase's idea on Postgres: auth, storage, realtime, and auto-generated APIs, open source and self-hostable. If Firebase's NoSQL model ever felt like the wrong fit, Supabase is the alternative built for the relational world.
